Religion

()

Why is there even religion in these rules? Its so tough to understand and no one in my group uses it anyway. Would someone please show me the importance of religion in Roleplaying Games?

Why Religion

Religion plays an important role in our current real world too,
(except perhaps for the richer parts of Europe and some other
urbanised areas - where you could again say Consumerism is the main
religion), and why is that?

In Dark Dungeon Christianity (in a somewhat different form) is
the central religion. This gives the possibility to use lots of
Christian mythology and history you cannot use in a game without religion (or Christianity).
Saints, Angels, miracles that work, ressurrection,
religious quests, Templar Knights, and so on.
It's good for a richer story, if not anything else.

However, if you want to play in a world without religion,
feel free! DD2? Functions as well without it. Or play in a team where
characters are explicitly not religious, in a religious world.

Or... is there something you do not understand about the specific
rules? If so, feel free to ask here - and be specific about what
you fail to understand!

religion

can i also make up a fictional religion and use it in the game, or for that matter use another real world religion.

Re: religion

In the world of Yaddrin?, which forms the basis for the DD2? setting, you would have to keep it a local custom (if its fictional). In your own reality however your free to do what ever pleases you. In Yaddrin every conceivable religion, based on real world folklore, antiquity, literature or visual media, has been introduced one time or an other.

Design-Your-Own Religion

Well spoken, Shim

Yes, you can make up your own religions.
Of course.

For game balance, make sure that miracles granted by each particular deity are restricted. Take no more than two narrow areas of influence
for each particular faith "skill". Otherwise priests may become far too powerful. Also make sure that you use one of the capital sins
and virtues suggested in the rulebook - or ones very similar. Religion is about ethics... in a way.

If you insist on using an allpowerful single deity (such as we know in
today's major religions...) who can grant all sorts of miracles, again for game balance, make all miracle prayer 6 points harder. 12 instead of 6, 15 instead of 9, etc.
